The trees do not touch heaven (yet), but they are firmly rooted
There are more than 100 PrimaKlima-afforestation areas in Germany, more specifically in North Rhine-Westfalia and Saxony, that have been installed between 1994 and 2000. In September of 2010, all of them (total area = 630 ha) were visited to document their development photographically.
The result is exeptional. The initially 50-80 cm tall seedlings grew to heights of 8 to 20 meters. On many areas, the additional wood growth far exceeds the calculated amount necessary for compensation projects. In single cases, the success of the afforestation is hardly satisfying, but the development of other areas more than compensates these rare cases.
The scientifically documented (Link) average CO2-compensation rate for the first 10 years of growth of 11 tons of CO2 per hectare and year on the project area "Engelsdorf" (near Leipzig) is not a coincidence, but rather typical for PrimaKlima afforestation areas.
